I have just received my result for M362 - the latest in what seems like a long line of OU courses. Managed a Distinction - one of 13 people who took the course with an OES of 89% and OCAS of 95%. It's been a tough year, so needless to say I was thrilled with this result. I am looking forwards to M366 - hopefully I can repeat the achievement of M362.SB Kirtonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10303198339979215890noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2385861971821681182.post-64306713376128345402008-12-10T11:10:00.002+00:002008-12-10T11:13:54.980+00:00M256 - The ResultLife has been hectic - the business has taken off, I have changed jobs, and I have only just realised that my grade for M256 has been published. I managed an 80% in the exam (Grade II) - which is disappointing in a way. I think, had I applied myself to the course better - particularly to the stuff at the beginning - I might have achieved a distinction. The fact remains I didn't, and I have to say that with the work I did (including not the greatest amount of revision) I probably achieved the mark I deserved.
I have decided that I would like to try and aim for a first for my OU degree. To this end I will need to pull my socks up and apply myself to the Level 3 course that starts in January.SB Kirtonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10303198339979215890noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2385861971821681182.post-83101561685476665362008-09-29T09:27:00.003+00:002008-09-29T09:33:04.507+00:00M256 TMA04 - The Result<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8WinaIST5M0u3oiXIYxqhc037ELk1diSuE6uwRVOW-YMMeFx2DYrdC4O1JpAc5-Ez0XHbRhxb6ulRDVuhNM_2m_mF3_SrL50IkfBs6o5DxDFPs7q7-xTr-spUW8ESyofURR2HYBVw1eA/s200/2008_09192bedandbreakfast0005.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5251373924753492226" />
Well, the fact that I have found the second half of this course more interesting than the first has been borne out in the results for the final TMA - 97%. This means I have successfully completed the Continuous assessment part of M256, and just have the exam to sit (and pass) on October 13th (luckily not a Friday). Revision seems to be going okay - I have gone through Units 1-7 so far, but I have to say that the first part of the course is still as dry to me, the second time around, as it was the first time. Important of course, but dry.SB Kirtonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10303198339979215890noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2385861971821681182.post-53128195424739753802008-09-10T12:34:00.002+00:002008-09-10T12:42:12.184+00:00M256 - TMA 04<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglA7dbI8QwqeJZ2deTDynx57YeORSSPVnpnFszLM-rjfDWo4gH-JSUYEPrMRKy8ErND8tnJdr4B0hElndYTb8yoiv03ldBJdOrQ1Nt03XvJLvORhpF0tCZ0MTk2SDhCUp2XO70uKVudJw/s200/2008_0903bedandbreakfast0014.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5244372016203828866" />
With the 11th September deadline looming for the final M256 TMA, I am happy to say that I managed to answer all the questions and have submitted my best effort. This will mean that I get the chance to enjoy my birthday, and gives me a clear run for the exam on October 13th. I should have a great deal of time to spend on revision given that my current job ends on September 25th, and I don't take up my next position (teaching Pharmacy at the University of Hertfordshire) until 3rd November - so hopefully the things which are still a little fuzzy will have crystallised in my mind by then.
I have to say, I found the latter half of this course much more enjoyable than the first bit, which I thought was dry and uninspiring. I found it much easier to become interested and involved with the more esoteric discussions surrounding usability in the later chapters than the specific language and structure required of, for example, requirements documentation in the earlier part. Like M263 it has been a course of two halves. On reflection I have enjoyed this course. Lets hope the exam isn't too bad.SB Kirtonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10303198339979215890noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2385861971821681182.post-34322441481224274602008-08-07T09:13:00.002+00:002008-08-07T09:22:16.000+00:00M256 - TMA 03<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkb7dwAiI31Rtv54kmOx3Wf8uBLMt_hm2snpiQ99GDdU6Pv6iEWWhYZ77vZ2AyyRT1oRTOwTFXOPerMenj6CLxp45TE_M5q_NQDrfZdXod5Wfil_p0oqk0qiBH0gqUE6lYKLd0w5A62oU/s200/2008_0602paris0007.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5231703560050366434" />
It seems like an age since there was any OU news, and now there are two pieces!
In addition to the M257 result, I have received the result for M256 TMA 03. A respectable 94%, which I am very pleased with. I did have an epiphany when I read my tutors comments wrt Question 2e - it was along the lines of '......ah! That's why it was worth so many marks' but it actually made sense - which is a good thing. I hate it when you have no idea what the issue was. :)

Reading the post-mortems on the M257 forum it seems like a lot of people got caught out on the exam - mainly the compulsory Question 1-10 section. It seems that there is something amiss when people averaging more than 90% on their TMAs are achieving only 58% on an examination - and I wonder whether this is usual for examinations. I can understand in the majority of cases that the scores achieved for TMAs will be higher than scores achieved for the exam - but largely think that attainment in TMAs should reflect attainment in exams. A discrepancy of over 30% between the two is something examiners should be worried about - isn't it?SB Kirtonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10303198339979215890noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2385861971821681182.post-63157428053633420272008-08-05T10:16:00.002+00:002008-08-05T10:26:26.523+00:00M257 - The ResultWell the M257 results have arrived, and I passed with a Grade 2 (76%). I am happy with the result, and the breakdown showed that I scored between 70 and 84% for all questions on the paper (1-10, 11 and 12) making it a solid Grade 2 performance. Given this, I don't think that there was an awful lot I could have done to push up for the Distinction (9% is a great deal to claw back!), but want to congratulate the 10% of people who sat the exam who achieved the highest grade. I thought I would have been more disappointed....but guess that I do have a healthy perspective on these things after all.

Things to take from this, is that I obviously need to concentrate on packing the relevant information into my short answer style questions (1-10) if I am to achieve the highest grade, and that subtleties in longer answer questions (11 and 12) need to be accounted for properly. All in all though, a satisfactory outcome, and if I can achieve a similar mark for the M256 exam in October I think I will be happy.SB Kirtonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10303198339979215890noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2385861971821681182.post-72987833799054893272008-06-19T10:53:00.002+00:002008-06-19T11:04:46.453+00:00The M257 exam<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQLdDx0ycd1bFyw-zcshEwsj6jnkj3AasZzPnYjMEHzf3LGAPf_ND6iscCA2S-Ep7QjN8KHPWURf2K2Rey1KuP18lq6EJ4muBsaINFC9w3wRt71llAkb5t6zH3zQ21cakCzH0gGbTumUQ/s200/2008_0602paris0010.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5213546889816788482" />
Well that wasn't too bad - in a bizarre twist, the man who marks my M256 TMAs was sitting beside me taking the M257 exam - it seems strange I was so worried about submitting my TMA on time, and having time for revising M257 whereas my tutor must have been worried about revising, and having time to mark all the TMAs.

There were no time constraints in this exam - finished with 20 minutes to spare (after travelling through at a leisurely pace) and was largely happy with what I had written. There are a couple of places where it wasn't clear what the examiner wanted, and I may have gotten hold of the wrong end of the stick, and a strange error (or deliberate mistake) in one of the longer answer questions which confused me - but overall I was happy with it. Think I've done enough to pass comfortably, and would hope for the highest grade for this one, but pride may come before a fall and so I will try not to get my hopes up.

Life can kind of resume now. I have M256 to finish - with the exam on October 13th - and then a short break until the Level 3 courses begin in January. The dogs, which have been in kennels for the last two nights, will be back tomorrow so things should return to normal fairly soon

Results due in August (6th). If I can have the TMA done by the 18th May (5 days) that will give me a full month to for the run-up to M257. I am nervous (as always) about the exam, mainly becuase of the new short answer style for the first 10 questions, and then a choice of 2 from 3 extended answers.

The last exam I did (M263) where I had to chose 2 from 4 questions I ended up picking (in retrospect) the wrong one. Not convinced that I won't do it again this time......SB Kirtonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10303198339979215890noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2385861971821681182.post-29290513474354299672008-05-13T12:36:00.002+00:002008-05-13T12:41:11.958+00:00And the results are in......Okay - so back from Florida (wonderful by the way - thoroughly recommend it) - and had the results for two assisgments waiting for me M257 TMA 04 and M256 TMA 01. Have to say that I wasn't expecting great shakes from either of them, and yet both came in at a respectable 92%.

The majority of the marks lost for M257 TMA 04 came from my inability to answer the last part of the last question.....I still don't fully understand the tutor's answer, so I guess that is something I will have to wait to grasp....or never will. Either way it was tough - and I would hope that the exam wouldn't throw up anything quite as demanding.

With M256 TMA 01 the majority of marks were lost on the first part (i.e. supposedly the easiest bit) of the TMA - where I lost five marks from not reading the question properly. Otherwise there were no major problems to report.SB Kirtonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10303198339979215890noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2385861971821681182.post-3210990583920395222008-03-17T16:15:00.002+00:002008-03-17T16:23:50.219+00:00In the doldrumsSeem to have lost the enthusiasm for my OU courses at the moment.
I don't know whether this is to do with me being mad busy at work - or the subject matter - but I am finding the M256 requirement documentation stuff very very dry. This lack of enthusiasm seems to have transferred into my TMA_01 part 1 mark - where I managed to drop 5% by not reading the question properly. Ah well - I suppose it should just galvanise me into performing my best on the second part... not sure that it is going to though.

I am also finding TMA 04 for M257 hard-going. Not because of the content, but because of the subject (threads) which I find a bit dull. Having said that I managed to complete most of the TMA (there are still the two final sections of Question 3 to finish) which is good because the TMAs for both M256 and M257 are due on the same day - April 10th.

Maybe the time pressure is getting to me - still with the continuous assessment for M257 finished after this, and a clear run to October for M256 I am sure it will work itself out in the end. And I have my holiday in Orlando to look forward to 1 week after the deadlines!! I can't wait :)SB Kirtonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10303198339979215890noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2385861971821681182.post-40942844463089014272008-02-20T14:57:00.002+00:002008-02-20T15:02:26.850+00:00M257 - TMA03The results are in for M257 - and once again I have done really well, 98% - thats 100%, 98%, 98% for the assignments so far. I lose my marks for code style - it isn't the most elegant - but I try to learn from my mistakes and improve every time I get the feedback.

I have to admit, that I have been really neglecting my OU studies of late - I think that I am technically behind with my reading for both M257 and M256. I need to pull my finger out.

If I am fishing around for excuses, it is probably because I have been so busy at both work and the gym after work, that OU stuff has been pushed to the bottom of the pile - plus as there are no looming deadlines I don't feel like I am under very much pressure. I realise this is dangerous as it could make me lazy, and the last thing I want to do is end up reading the units only so I can answer the TMA questions....that doesn't help anyone.

Maybe tonight I will make a concerted effort to get back on track.SB Kirtonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10303198339979215890noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2385861971821681182.post-69321227670847164422008-01-09T10:29:00.000+00:002008-01-09T10:34:10.086+00:00M257 - So far so goodOnce again the first two TMAs of M257 seem to be going well, with a 100% for the first and a 98% for the second. I have to say that I am really enjoying the level two Java courses - they are very much a 'get in and do something useful' experience, and the navel gazing and contemplation that accompanied some of the Level 1 courses (and the horrendous in my opinion M253) are significantly diluted. It doesn't mean that you don't have to reflect on stuff, you just reflect in a more useful and relevant way.

I am midway through TMA03 - I have managed to complete the first two questions and am considering question 3 as we speak. I can't explain the sense of reward that is achieved by writing a GUI which is interactive and does what you want it to. It really is first rate.SB Kirtonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10303198339979215890noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2385861971821681182.post-21896036289266344422008-01-09T10:13:00.000+00:002008-01-09T10:28:45.297+00:00M255 ResultsThe M255 results are now published, and once again I have managed to surprise myself with a distinction! I am thrilled that I seem to be achieving with this new way of learning, but am worried as to how I will cope with the inevitable exam result which is not a distinction. Probably best to think about that when it happens.SB Kirtonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10303198339979215890noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2385861971821681182.post-33153283517974378722007-12-07T16:21:00.001+00:002007-12-07T16:28:59.487+00:00M257Well, M257 is underway and seems to be going okay at the moment (although to be honest the first 5 modules didn't have a lot of new content when compared to the course I have just completed (M255)). The results for the first TMA were good, and I have completed (although not submitted) the second one - which should give me a nice leisurely run up to Christmas.

I have signed up for M256 which begins in Feb, and is the last of the Level 2 courses I need to complete - reading between the lines it seems to be more discursive than both M257 and M255 so I might have to put a slightly different slant on things whilst I am studying.

I toyed with the idea of running a Level 3 course simultaneously in Feb, but ultimately decided against it. I think it probably would have been manageable if I hadn't had M257 running too - but 80 points would put too much of a strain on things I think. The current setup with the course means that I won't be able to follow my one in Feb, one in Oct model for the Level 3 courses as all of them only run once a year and begin in Feb. Seems a bit strange 60 points all in one go, and then nothing for a couple of months and I need to read the comments and reviews and talk to the course convenors to work out the best combinations. I still think it is important to keep the 60 points a year model - otherwise I won't be graduating until 2012!

Off out for dinner this evening - the first of a long list of festive bashes. Deep breath everyone......SB Kirtonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10303198339979215890noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2385861971821681182.post-6581612523088853092007-10-17T13:37:00.000+00:002007-10-17T13:44:21.600+00:00The M255 examWell, despite the best efforts of Cambridgeshire conspiring against me I managed to both attend and complete my M255 exam - the second of the OU exams I have sat since starting my degree in Computing (B29) in October 2005.

I have to say that it was a stretch. The material covered was diverse, and was not quite as straightforward as similar questions from the previous years. I am confident that I will have passed, but not confident of the grade. We will have to see - I have no control over it now.

The OU forums are ablaze with people who really thought the exam unfair in its content and didn't have enough time to complete the questions. My personal thoughts are that this is largely down to exam technique - rather than a lack of knowledge - and teaching this technique is probably an area where the OU could do more to help its students.SB Kirtonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10303198339979215890noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2385861971821681182.post-89276717674485288312007-08-30T10:58:00.001+00:002007-08-30T11:01:32.319+00:00Mangled Brain!Well I have just come back from my holiday - on the Queen Mary II - and it was wonderful - and to commemorate there is a new photo - which actually includes me - on the blog.

I will get round to a proper update in the near future, M255 is going well and the final assignment is being checked for as we speak. However, all the learning I have had to do coupled with the break has pushed all useful information out of my brain. This morning when I got to work I had forgotten my pass code to get in and had to be let in by the receptionist.....ah well.SB Kirtonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10303198339979215890noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2385861971821681182.post-68246177157867516622007-08-01T15:38:00.000+00:002007-08-01T15:43:37.285+00:00The Open University Boost I neededHaving been jaded with the whole OU experience recently (mainly because of the M253 horror) I have been given the boost to get back on with things that I needed.

Two course results have been returned - and by heck they were good ones.

MST121 - my second mathematics course - was returned and I had OCAS and OES scores of 98%. Unsurprisingly I really enjoyed this course, but was still pleasantly surprised by how well I performed on the last two assignments.

But, the big surprise was M263 - Distinction (WOO HOO!). I am so happy (although the question I performed most badly on was not actually the question that I thought I had stuffed up - strange but true). It was a very valuable experience in exam technique and I am relieved to have got off to this flying start as far as graded examinable components for my degree are concerned. It has given me the boost to get stuck back into M255 to see if I can reproduce this feat. :)SB Kirtonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10303198339979215890noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2385861971821681182.post-55235229654047277822007-07-23T08:40:00.000+00:002007-07-23T08:48:20.335+00:00M255 - recapturing the enthusiasmSo after the misery that was M253, and the intensity leading up to the M263 exam, M255 got lost in the quagmire and I found myself with little enthusiasm for the course. However, with TMA 03 I made a conscious effort to get my arse back into gear and get on with it. What do you know - it paid off. I managed a 99% - which I am very proud of. Hopefully I can carry the momentum forward into the final TMA and onwards to the exam in October.

Having looked at the specimen paper it looks challenging - but I can only do my best, and there is my holiday between now and then to enervate me even more!SB Kirtonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10303198339979215890noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2385861971821681182.post-41488187891383184142007-07-23T08:36:00.000+00:002007-07-23T08:39:45.216+00:00M253 FeedbackSo I passed M253 - not wonderfully - but I passed it.
What is confusing is that I received some feedback on the examinable component - i.e. the last assignment - and I am not sure if it makes any sense. I don't know whether too much time has elapsed between getting the results or what but the comments didn't really help..............

Ah well - onwards and upwards.SB Kirtonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10303198339979215890noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2385861971821681182.post-68260612830288925672007-06-06T08:34:00.000+00:002007-06-06T08:36:10.166+00:00A death in the family....Alas one of the turbo snails has shuffled off the mortal coil.
(S)/he had been falling off things a lot lately so I imagine that the end was nigh but unfortunately last Friday I found an upturned shell and no sign of an inhabitant.

Who will eat my algae now?SB Kirtonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10303198339979215890noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2385861971821681182.post-35336006282488109632007-06-05T16:21:00.000+00:002007-06-05T16:24:18.337+00:00M253 Results?I wonder where the M253 results are....it has been over two months since the final ECA and as of yet there has been no word.

The date for the final submission was March 26, any yet here we are ten weeks later with no results.

I think I will mail the OU to check.SB Kirtonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10303198339979215890noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2385861971821681182.post-47886501847676074792007-05-28T12:40:00.001+00:002007-05-28T12:51:19.750+00:00Long time no post....It seems like forever since I got round to writing on this thing...I blame work. The new job is keeping me very busy which means I have less time to muse!

So what has happened since the last posting - well the marine tank now has two Clarki Clown Fish, 2 Yellow-Tailed Damsels and a Firefish (very pretty but very shy). As we speak I am acclimating a blood shrimp to the tank. He is not the happiest little shrimp at the moment, but hopefully that will pass and he will settle down.

There is also a figure of 8 puffer going into the tropical tank - he is beautiful, I just hope he isn't ultra destructive....there are plenty of snails for him to chomp on though - so he should be fine.

As far as OU goes things are still fairly hectic. I am finally getting over the horror that was M253, and managed to get my final TMA for M263 in on time. The result truly shocked me - 99% - guess I know more than I thought I did. We will have to see how I fare in the exam - which is no the 11th June. It will be my first exam in 8 years so I am not expecting miracles!

M255 TMA 02 is due this week (24th) and luckily it is finished. Also MST121 TMA_04 is also due for submission. That has been written for a while so all I have to do is to remember to put it in the post next week and that will be all of my level 1 courses done and dusted (I have already submitted the last CMA for MST121). There have been no results for M253 as of yet. I have provided the OU with my feedback on "the worst course ever" though.

In other news I am back at the gym - it has been a real mental struggle after being out for so long with my back but, touch wood, it is going really well - and I am much much happier in myself because of it.

Hopefully won't be another month before I post my next entry!SB Kirtonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10303198339979215890noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2385861971821681182.post-62895818898520609892007-04-09T16:34:00.000+00:002007-04-09T16:38:52.330+00:00M263 - The Easter TMA resultsSo the consistency continues.
The TMA 3 results are in and, guess what, another 95% - I love it LOL - talk about consistency (that is 95% for every one of the TMAs on this course so far).
I found this TMA the most challenging I have done to date for any of my courses - not lest because of the lack of motivation I had for it arising from the horror that was M253, so it is really satisfying that I have done a decent job on it.

With the finishing line in sight lets hope I can carry the consistency forwards into TMA 4, which I haven't found as difficult as TMA 3 so far and the end of term exam. It would be nice to have a Pass 1 - but not the end of the world if that doesn't happen.SB Kirtonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10303198339979215890noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2385861971821681182.post-12615342095630423492007-04-09T16:31:00.000+00:002007-04-11T16:10:12.556+00:00Clown Fish!

I am now the proud owner of two Clarki Clown Fish. Luckily M253 is now finished, and both MST 121 and M263 are coming to an end (at least I don't have an exam for MST 121!) and I think I will slip down to 2 courses a year - one starting in Feb and one starting in October - that amount of overlap I can manage!

Anyway - I didn't forget MST 121 and sent off TMA 03 - dreaded calculus. As usual it was marked in extra quick time, and I got the result in the post yesterday - 99%!!!! How cool is that - this is much better than I thought I would do (suppose it is a question of confidence, and past experiences having struggled with calculus at A-Level). It is nice to be lifted by a positive learning experience after the disappointment of M253.SB Kirtonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10303198339979215890noreply@blogger.com0
